The Borderlands Project is one of the most exciting and innovative development programs being operated in coffee today. Its mission is relatively specific: to help improve the livelihoods of thousands of smallholder farmers living in the border regions of Southern Colombia and Northern Ecuador. Coffee was identified as the most appropriate vehicle to support this goal, as the area is blessed with advantageous climate conditions that create the potential for extraordinary coffee quality.... Read more »

This past weekend, Intelligentsia barista Sarah Anderson won the 2015 US Brewers Cup. Sarah is a senior barista at our Pasadena location in California and won the South West Regional back in October. It's the first time Intelligentsia has won this competition, and the first time it's been won by a female competitor.... Read more »

In January of 2011, we released our first seasonal espresso, Honey Badger. The name was inspired by the pursuit of sweetness with an aggressive, assertive edge – a blend both wildly citric and decidedly sweet. Sugar Glider was the second seasonal espresso blend we crafted, and it was the yin to Honey Badger's yang. Soft, sweet, and almost cuddly (like the little gliding mammals), Sugar Glider is your warm, huggable espresso friend.... Read more »

This weekend three Intelligentsia employees will compete in the United States Coffee Championships, taking place in Long Beach California. This is the national competition that all the regionals have been leading up to. There are two competitions: the United States Barista Championship and the United States Brewers Cup.... Read more »

This was a truly remarkable and record setting year for Vickie Dalton’s Matalapa and Intelligentsia. Great weather, and a concerted effort by everyone, allowed us to select and ship this coffee earlier than ever before. This year’s rains caused a whopping five flowerings on the trees, which normally see two or three, providing a much larger and spread-out harvest.... Read more »

Two weeks ago, we took our Uppers and Downers series to the next level, and held our first ever coffee beer festival. An ongoing, collaborative series with Michael Kiser of Good Beer Hunting, this was the biggest thing we've done yet: 600 people, a multi-roaster espresso bar courtesy of La Marzocco Home, 14 brewers and a huge array of beer styles with coffee as a key ingredient.... Read more »

The results achieved are truly stunning coffees.... Read more »

This weekend - we've sent a full team over to Park City, Utah to run a pop-up Intelligentsia coffeebar at the Sundance Film Festival. We're there with our friends at Acura, and have a full pourover bar with Acaia scales, and a La Marzocco 2 group Linea. Our baristas came from Intelligentsia locations in Chicago, New York and Atlanta, and they'll be serving up coffee starting today through Monday. This our first time participating in Sundance and we couldn't be more excited. If you're in the area, drop by and say hi!... Read more »

THE BEST WAY to describe the nature of the Extraordinary Coffee Workshop is one part meeting of the minds, one part family reunion, and one part perspective-enhancing travel that helps us all grow as coffee professionals and strengthen our partnerships with one another. Every year it changes location, and our ever-growing international collective of coffee producers comes together to learn and share. Over the past five years we’ve hosted the event in Colombia, El Salvador, Brazil and the US. The 6th annual ECW was our first in Africa and the most ambitious event we’ve ever planned.... Read more »

As part of our reserve collection series - we're getting ready to launch the Finca Santuario Collection. Some of you may remember the Santuario name from years past. Our first Extraordinary Coffee Workshop took place at the farm, we've sold its incredible coffees many times over the years and we even hosted a special dinner at our Pasadena coffeebar where local chefs developed an eight-course meal pairing each dish to different coffees from the Santuario variety garden.... Read more »
