Our Monadnock coffeebar is located in Chicago’s historic Monadnock building at 53 West Jackson in the Loop. The north half of the building was built from 1889-91 and the south half from 1891-93. At sixteen floors and 197 feet tall, this is the world’s tallest masonry building! The north part, famed for its lack of ornamentation, is the last skyscraper to employ a wall-bearing building method. The exterior walls are six feet thick at the base and give the building a monumentally tough, straight-forward look. The south half is an early example of steel-frame construction, revealed by its narrow piers and wide windows.
The interior of the building has been beautifully restored and is straight out of 1920’s Chicago with art deco grating and fixtures, exposed woodwork, and marble floors. Styled to resemble an Italian espresso bar, this store features original tile floors, marble-topped tables and classic bar stylings. For those of you more familiar with our other coffeebars, this one is a bit more of a classic as compared to our Broadway or Millennium Park locations.
