The Alarcón family's Finca Palestina is nestled high in the majestic Andes mountain range, near the village of San José del Alto in the Cajamarca region of northern Peru. The farm lies at the end of a long and windy road, about three hours from the nearest paved highway.
José Alarcón is the second-generation grower leading Finca Palestina, and he has partnered with the team at Origin Coffeelab in recent seasons to systematically improve everything the farm does. This approach led them to co-invest in a new depulper, new fermentation tanks, and new raised beds for drying, and to identify the most promising genetic material on the farm.
Many of the coffee trees in the area around La Palestina have fallen victim to the dreaded coffee leaf rust disease, but José noticed some older Bourbon plants on the farm that appeared a bit different than other trees and were thriving. He began collecting seeds from these hardy trees, which he refers to as "Bourbon mutations," and sent samples for genetic testing. We are still waiting for a verdict on the coffee's genetics, but one thing is beyond doubt: the cup quality of the first significant harvest of the Alarcón's “Bourbon mutations” is phenomenal.
The coffee has great balance and a crisp citric acidity not common in this part of Peru. We are thrilled to offer this lot from the Alarcón family and Finca Palestina.
